Bred by the likes of successful directors like V K Prakash, debutante Vinay Govind safely follows his mentor's style in the new movie 'Kili Poyi'. With a fine production design, and values, this movie may not be savored by any who looks for quality story content or inspiring messages. With such a funny title, none would have expected it to deliver such things, though....
Yet another friendship and adventure tale, that was kick started by the likes of 'Dil Chahta Hai', the movie has Asif Ali and Aju Varghese playing Chacko and Hari , two buddies who are working in a firm at Bangalore. Their demanding and pressure filled life often take comfort in Ganja, drinking and smoking. Always irked, harassed and fed up by the tantrums of their lady boss (Sandra Thomas) ,they decides to take a break and head to Manali. But as their naughty plays fail them to catch the flight, they head to Goa in a vintage car. Chacko establish friendship with a beautiful foreigner named Rachel(Sabreen Baker) , who but puts a bag full of cocaine into their car in a moment of haste. They return to Bangalore with a million dollar worth mysterious bag. But soon things get mixed up; they are on to embroil more trouble as giant gangs are on the streets to find clues about the bag.
Suitably forewarned for its 'A' certification, the movie, which gets over in less than hundred minutes, targets only the youth among the new generation audiences. And so 'Kili Poyi' is replete with routine youth dialogues, adult double entr�es', plenty of smoke and 'F...' words. Very few sequences go without the mandatory warning stuff on drinking and smoking. Apart from the drinking, this time the protagonists have stepped on to the use of 'Ganja' in a regular mode, making it look like an appreciable act for viewers who even hadn't thought of that.
Though the scripts are average, the hilarious, natural dialogues, bits and pieces of old classic films finely integrated into the narratives and good performances are the aces of the movie .The director Vinay Govind shows immense promise as a name to stay afloat in commercial Mollywood. He has carefully avoided the clich�, and has packaged a pacy thriller which doesn't bore you much. The technical sides are top notch with excellent cinematography and aptly toned visuals from Pradheesh M Nair, while Mahesh Narayanan's sharp cuts has eliminated any fall in the narrative pace. Also the music, title song and background score by Rahul Raj are excellent, remarkably elevating the quality of the narratives. One of the high points is the climax BG lines that is an absolute winner.
In the acting side, Asif Ali dissuades to play the overpowering hero this time, which is a welcome get back to the safer zone. His aid Aju gets enough space to impress us with his smart, well timed reactions. Sampath in his macho look shines as Rana, while Raveendran as Disco Douglas is also convincing. Joju George and Sreejith Ravi play to their role. But the female protagonists don't have much to do, as usual.
Overall,' Kili Poyi' is definitely not your cup of tea if you have been chagrined by films like 'Delly Belly' and 'TrivandrumLodge'. For all those conventional viewers, please stay away as you may not be able to sustain a half an hour of the movie. For the rest, 'Kili Poyi' may be an above average experience. A smoke filled entertainer, without anything inspiring, though.
