ORU INDIAN PRANAYAKATHA MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

It is after a long time that Sathyan Anthikkad has moved out of his regular crew and actors in his recent films. The latest in 'Oru Indian Prayakadha', he is with Fahadh Faasil, the new generation actor known for his  original style of acting. Sathyan , but offers Fahad yet another conventional comedy character which is characteristic of the director. Fahad in that typical Jayasuirya-Dileep role  is the only highlight of the movie which is every bit a regular clichd Sathyan fare in content and narratives.
The movie presents Fahad as  Aymanan Sidharthan, a local young politician of RDF party from Kottayam. Waiting for the death of sitting MLA who is currently in the death bed, this  blue eyed boy of party's district president , a TV discussion-savvy UthupVallikkadan (Innocent), he is sure to be the next candidate and the party M LA soon.  However, his hopes are dashed when the High Command opts for a more influential female candidate. Dejected, he decides to a take a short leave from the party work and takes up the job of assisting a young woman named Irene Gardner (Amala Paul), a Canadian citizen who has just arrived to make a documentary film on orphanages. But within days Sidhaarthan realises that Irene is here not just for making documentaries, but to answer some crucial identity issues that has been disturbing her for some time.
Though with a simple storyline, Iqbal Kuttipuram has taken out sequences from earlier Sathyan films and movies like 'Orkut oru Ormakkut'. They just manage to make it a watchable film though there has been plenty of 'we have been there' sequences. The scenes like 'Sidharthan and Irene start pretending to be husband and wife' and similar drama doesn't add to the cause of narrative. The second half is little serious sans logic in the 'mission of identity unearthing' , and the last one hour   just has plenty of melodrama that doesn't work effectively. The dialogues needed to be more witty and creative than they are now.
Fahad doesn't look too comfortable in a role that has become a regular in these kind of movies. Though this is the role that just doesn't suit him, he laboriously sticks to new mannerisms and makes things work.  Amala Paul looks fine in her role and excels in her subtle act which doesn't fall apart except in a single shot where she is shown weeping for long.  Others in the casting line-up looks apt for their roles, though there is not much that stands exceptional. Pradeep Nair's visuals are ok, but Vidhysagar's B G Scores are loud. His couple of songs are good though
Oru Indian Pranayakatha is another Sathyan Anthikkad style movie which will appeal to family audiences. Though not anything exceptional, this may manage to end up in the safe side at the Box Office.

EZHU SUNDARA RATHRIKAL MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

Lal Jose seems to have lost his chemistry of making worthy films whenever he is in company with his favourite star Dileep  with whom he has made big hits like 'Chandhupottu' and 'Meesa Madhavan'. Of late their movies together were all poor at commercial front . Following this line of flicks like 'Mulla' and 'Spanish Masala' is his latest for this Christmas 'Ezhu Sundhara Rathrikal'. A movie made like a Hollywood drama, it fails in emitting any sort of emotions on the viewers or among the characters on screen.
The movie written by James Albert showcases the issues faced by a man, just seven days before his marriage . Dileep is Aby , a known name in the advertising world. He is all set to marry Ann (Parvathy Nambiar)  one of the models that he has introduced. Exactly seven days before their marriage, when Aby floats a bachelor party he gets to know that his past flame Sini(Rima Kalligal) has returned to the same city. On a spur of a moment, Aby decides to walk to her house and to invite her to his marriage. This kickstarts certain unprecedented happenings, which may create tension to  Sini  and her husband boxer Tyson Alex (Murali Gopi). Aby and Sini now starts to somehow evade the impending issues which generates more problems for each of them.
And off course, there are plenty of subplots ranging from Aby's close friend  Franco (Tini Tom) and his doctor wife Daisy (Praveena),  and the police officer in love with Ann (Sreejith Ravi), the strange lady bike rider and Baijuraj (Anil Rajgopal), which all is heaped up to create a complex tale, which but loose sheen by the midway.
The movie is basically a confusion drama, with artificially made up situations poping up every now and then without logic. The dialogues which are indented to evoke laughter doesn't necessarily do so always and the lack of energy in the entire narratives add to the woes of the viewer. The only points of the movie where its sails effectively seem to be the last 40 minutes in the first half, which but grips you with least predictability quotients. There are a few hilarious moments in between, but the mood doesn't get any better in the later half, as we look in disbelief how even a gifted director and a talented crew can spoil the show. The way it all settles out in the final is painstakingly amateurish as the viewers really lookout to somehow end the proceedings that has nothing worthwhile to tell.
As usual with every Laljose film, the technical sides are good. There seems to be more unwanted wide shots across scenes which affects the pacing and emotions. Pradheesh's shots are good Prashath varma's BG Scores are effective, but there is a definite lack of chart topper songs that is the usual highlight of every Laljose movie. . The animated sequences and short spoofy remake of songs that are expected to be side-splitting doesn't work well as expected and at time projects out like a sour thump.
Dileep is at the best , just ok for the role where our next door man is expected to be more stylish  roaming around in a BMW, while Rima Kallingal looks gorgeous but at times is more serious than required. Murali Gopi is effective while Parvathy Nambiar doesn't make any big impact though she has an impressive smile.Anil Rajagopal who appears in a few scenes turns out to be the scene stealer, while Suraj, Harishree Ashokan and Dileep's gangs of friends around including Tinitom and Arun appears big misfit for their roles of sidekicks who works around the hero.
Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal, may not get a decent run in the Box office, though a fine crew is behind it .Though it has its moments and a workable base plot, the translation to screens demands much more to make it a feel good stuff. It seems that Dileep is finding it difficult to gather viewers, everytime when he tries something different from his regular comedy stuffs.

DRISHYAM MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

Director Jeethu Joseph since his debut with 'Detective' has managed to create a number of hit films including a 'Mummy and Me' which even entered Indian Panorama. And now with his first outing with Superstar Mohanlal, he has proved how mature he is as an inspiring director who surprise viewers with his storytelling methods. In this process he also delivers another hit for Mohanlal who had a bad time with his films in 2013. A gripping tale that keeps you engaged , the also have an impressive script, technical sides and performances to make it to the bests of the year from Mohanlal.
Mohanlal is clad in an earthy role as  Georgekutty, a man who just managed with his school education to make it big with his hardwork.  He now  runs a cable TV business in a sleepy village called Rajakkad,  a few miles away from Thodupuzha. A miser even in his  limited dreams, he has a very supportive family including his wife Rani(Meena) and his daughters Anju(Ansiba) and Anu (Esther). They though make fun of his tight fisted ways, they are happy that Georgekutty is able to meet their modest demands.
Much of the former half is dedicated to tell about the closeness of the family and the deep ties that they share within. But as Varun (Roshan), an intruder walks abruptly into their lives, they are left to be tested for their power of togetherness.
Though the movie start s in a slower pace with few attempts on double meaning wits that doesn't deliver , it soon falls on track on the later half. Much of the moments here leave you with real surprise as the fine scripts and execution from Jeethu Joseph, makes way for spellbounding movie  that leaves you engrossed all the way from a simple plot. The suspense element and the climax is finely executed which makes everyone leave the seat with applause.
Impressive performances from Mohanlal is another highlight of the movie  The most versatile actor of our times use the best of the subtle ways to weave multiple dimensions to a character  which makes it the best from Mohanlal after 'Bhramaram'. In an earthy role that works well for him, the actor excels in all the shades and priceless expressions provided. Kalabhavan Shajon excels as a corrupt police officer which may be called best in his career till date while esther  and Ansiba proves that they are powerhouse of talents. Meena, Siddhique  and  others also deliver bravura support to the lead man.
Sujith Vasudev 's cinematography is fine and appropriate in creating the  thriller mood of the film.   The musical scores and two songs  by Anil Johnson and Vinu Thomas are also refreshing, which builds the tempo.
In the final analysis , this 'Drishyam' is undoubtedly cladded with exceptional story telling combined with bravura performances. The director Jeethu Joseph is receiving a standing ovation for his fine execution of a well written material from a very simple plot. An undoubtedly exceptional film as far the content is concerned, the movie is a must watch for all the audiences of family and thriller movies.

SILENCE MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

After a few back to back hits , V K Prakash is for the first time teaming up with Megastar Mammootty for the film 'Silence' which got to theatres this week.An intended suspense thriller which tells about an advocate who is trying to correct a judgement which he forced earlier , the movie but lost its sheen as its progresses to the climax.
The movie has Mammootty as Aravind Chandrsekhar, a immensity successful advocate with a big set of juniors who are in all awe for his track records. And now he is being selected to become the judge of a district court. But as he gets ready to join the prestigious assignment, an anonymous call starts to come in. At first Aravind dismisses it as someone playing prank but soon he identifies it from someone who has a definite cause for the call. With  the help of the top police officer Niel (Anoop Meonon) , Aravind starts to track the anonymous caller. And when he comes in face-to face, he accidentally get killed. But very soon Aravind realizes that this is just a start of some events as some more are in the hunt of the man who will soon sworn in as a the new judge.
Silence is one movie that does have a fine base plot , but one which lost much on translation. The screenplay and dialogues by Y V Rajesh fails to impress and doesn't pack much in the final reels. With a lot of confusing scenes in the second half , the viewers definitely get a feeling that the movie is moving off track. And the climax in the dam is not that convincing.
Mammootty appears stylish all through the movie in fine glasses and dress codes and   he plays to the demand of the character. He shares a special chemistry with Anoop Menon . The rest of the cast are also OK, but without a fine writing support, the director couldn't pull off a fine suspense drama. His technicians including the cinematographer and editor Mahesh Narayanan does work fine and so is the BG Scores, but the movie may not appeal to any for the definite interests of the audience and is expected to fall out soon from the theatres.
If you go in with the least expectations, this 110 minute drama may appeal to die-hard fans of the megastar.

VEDIVAZHIPADU MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

VEDIVAZHIPADU MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW & RATTING

After a lot of controversial posters, teasers and tag line, Vedivazhipadu came out with an A certificate from the censor board. The name itself created a curiosity among audience. The tagline of the movie "Moralists please bear with us" was intended to question the pseudo morality of Malayali folk. Young director Shambu Purushothaman succeeded in creating all his hoopla over  his debut flick but not that much success in depicting his genuine thoughts in the most interesting pattern. Had it  been filmed in a bit more convincing and meaningful way, the movie would have been worth a fine watch.
The movie portrays just two days in two hours. It starts a day before Attukal Pongala and ends at the final segment of Pongala. Story moves  mainly through the life of three couples- Pradeep (Sreejith Ravi), a share market business man and his wife Vidya (Mythili), a French tutor, Sanjay (Saiju Kurup), a bank employee, and  his wife Reshmi (Anusree), a channel reporter, and  Rahul (Murali Gopi), a computer game tester and , his wife Radhika (Anjana Menon) is a home maker. Joseph (Indrajith) an investment broker is another important character of the movie.
On the day of Attukal Pongala Pradeep, Rahul and Sanjay joins to make their day memorable with alcohol and a woman. Sumithra (Anumol) plays the role of the sex worker who was invited to Rahul's house by the three in the absence of their better halves.  Vidya make a visit to Joseph's house for Pongala, Reshmi was busy with the shoot of Attukal Pongala for her channel and Radhika went for the Pongala. What happens to the three of them and their wives forms the rest of the movie.
Even if the narration has nothing new, the movie seems sensible with it's interesting backdrops. Double meaning jokes that are in plenty are but well received by the audience with applause in the theatre and arises an uncertainty about the way tastes are moulded by new generation movie makers. The whole cast and crew did justice to their roles but none were extra ordinary. Hats off to Anumol for her willingness to take up such a role.
An extra ordinary part of the movie was the way Attukal Pongala's ambiance was recorded live which must receive applauds. Shahnad Jalal's camera work was impressive especially the Pongala visuals. Bijibals background score was but plain and unsatisfactory. A couple of sub plots in the movie which handles long distant relationships, sincerity and sexual harassment went well in the movie.
"Vedivazhipadu" though after setting a fine premise loses its momentum after a while , when all sort of clichs associated with adventures of these types follows. Intervention of some spiritual powers and the purpose of highlighting the use of blue colour were ambiguous. The question is the reason of a holy ritual and thereby affecting the feelings of religious groups, to convey such a storyline which could be portrayed in any other manner. In spite of the controversies, the movie can be labelled as a "come and enjoy" one.

BICYCLE THIEVES REVIEW & RATTING

BICYCLE THIEVES REVIEW & RATTING

The new generation filmmakers has done away with the art of presenting any story in linear narratives. And so,in its extreme nonlinear format of story telling is debutant director Jis Joy's Bicycle Thieves. Planned as a thriller, with a twist comingup in every ten minutes, the movie offers an onetime watch for all those who love thrillers that is told as a jigsaw-puzzle.
The movie has Asif Ali as Chackochan  who lost his parents early , and  into a  miserable childhood. He is forced to flee on a stolen bicycle and bumps into a bicycle thief (Salim Kumar) and  his two young lads. (Saiju Kurup and Bineesh Kodiyeri).  While attempting a biggest heist of prowling a businessman  (saikumar) which fails , the team splits up and Chacko repositions into another city., where he continues his acts in a bigger scale with success.
Without realising his shady acts, one bank employee Meera ( Aparna Gopinath)  falls for Chackochan, which changes his life from isolation . He starts to make important resolutions in his life and takes up the job of a car driver, making the narrative to move on another direction.
The movie has an interesting screenplay, but it takes almost an hour to introduce the characters, who has definite roles to play as it progreses. The unwanted details but kills the interest at some portions of the movie, whose bits and pieces are finely grouped up in the end. The final twenty minutes is a twist galore, which may interest the die hard fns of the genre, while others sits in total bewilderment. Though it appear that the world around Chackochan is certainly too small with the characters of his early life bumping into him in a regular manner, the debutante director Jis Joy has been able to pack the screenplay and its bigger characters in a decent way, without letting out too much of its suspense. Binendra Menon's visuals and Deepak Dev's music support the director's endeavour to keep up the pace and the interest in the proceedings.
But at nearly two hours and thirty minutes, the film looks a little long with a need of trimming, Asif Ali looks convincing in the lead and Aparna Gopinath is good and extend the charm  that she has displayed in her debut film.  Vijay Babu, as Kashy the drunken lawyer steals the show from others in the cast who are adequate in their roles..
Though this Bicycle Thieves has no connection with the classic film of yore with the same title, it will not bore you. A fine option for all those who love the genre.

Escape from Uganda REVIEW & RATTING

Escape from Uganda REVIEW & RATTING

Escape from Uganda' is one rare movie that was shot in the exotic locales of Uganda. Directed by Rajesh Nair, the movie plots in a sensible story that but lacks believability in the final reels.
The movie has Reema Kallingal as Shikha Samuel, an Indian women working as a costume designer setting p as boutique. She is leading a happy life with her husband Jayakrishnan, with whom she eloped to this African nation years ago. They have a school  going child Meenakshy. One fine days when she was travelling to one of her friend's house to deliver a jewel studded gown, she is accused for killing two women including the daughter of the city Mayor and is sent to jail. With the only man who could help them from the Indian community, Adv Feroz is shot dead, Jayakrishnan is left with few options to bail out his wife. In comes Antony, a weird but funny man who agrees to save Shikha, if he is  paid handsomely for the deed.
Though inspired from many Hollywood thrillers including 'The next three days', the movie packs in enough to keep an average viewer satisfied. Though the hard core thrills are missing here, there is a bit of suspense , not that difficult to crack. The cinematography by Vishnu Sharma  is quite impressive while the rest of the technical crew has managed to make the movie slick, though shooting in an alien country.
The final thirty minutes is quite in the thriller mode with Rima Kallingal trying her best to look impressive in a fine character.Vijay Babu is impressive as her husband while Parthipan steals the show as Antony with a lot of one liners. The African actors are believable while Martin Morais as the investigative officer lend the optimum support.
The songs by Gopi Sundar and Varun looked good, aptly supporting the mood of the film.
All in all, this escape from Uganda' may not be a bad thriller' if you hadn't been a big regular with the  thriller mode. For the rest, the movie may not offer anything big other than the bird's eye view shots of Uganda.
