OLIPPORU REVIEW

Coming from director A V Sasidharan, 'Olipporu' is one movie that will test the sensibilities of an ordinary movie goer. A movie that is constructed in a disoriented narrative, taking liberal clues from the stage, 'Olipporu' deals with the travels of a blogger who pass through some very unfamiliar life situations.

Fahad Fazil is Ajayan, a blogger who writes under the pseudoname of 'Olipporali'. A popular name in the circuit for his finesse in   thinking and writing, he with an association of bloggers named gear, brake and clutch from various areas are planning to host a show at Bangalore. But on the very day the organiser of the show, Ajayan was expected to arrive, he mets with an accident which makes him lay in between life and death. The movie follows the reminiscences of the young man about his childhood rearing and values, as his body lay awaiting an imminent death.
The movie fails to unleash in proper grammar, with the scripts by poet P N Gopikrishnan laden with ridiculously simple lyrics and heavy literature leaving the viewer suffocated with abstract ideas. This deliberate hollowness of a tedious screenplay takes the little beauty of is unconventional story telling methods. Moreover, the backgrounding of the central man and their intentions for the show are never properly dealt with. The little areas which invite interest includes the relationship between the grandfather and Ajayan,  and the struggles of the young man to correct his pronunciation of three similar sounding letters.

Fahad Fazil is asked to walk more distances across the lanes of Bangalore and the corridors of hospital with a mystified stare and to talk directly to the viewers. Apart from that mystery filled portrait of the central man, there is nothing more to satisfy an actor of his league. The other characters appear plastic and without life which gives a staged feeling all through. Apart from a few fine long range shots by Manoj Mundayattu , there is nothing much that can engage you in this sober drama which tries to tell a lot behind its myriad mysterical narratives.
All in all this 'Olipporu' definitely ends up as a guerrilla warfare with the audience who may not get a trace of the hidden intentions behinds its making, even after being with it for a pretty long 109 minutes.

It was a big shock for a debutant director like Fazal when his movie with Fahad Fazil 'Iyyer In Pakistan' has been shifted in the last minute. The movie was postponed due to many reasons including changes in the plot.
But the director has still managed to woo the most popular young actor of Mollywood  , Fahad Fazil for his new project. This yet to titled film will be a thriller, a caop and robber story.Produced by   Aroma Mani in the banner of Sunitha Productions, the movie will be on sets by November.

KALIMANNU REVIEW

Keralites have a general hobby of creating commotions for  anything and everything, without placing them  in a proper context. So was the case with the most noted director of the decade Blessy, when the news spread about about him shooting live pregnancy and delivery of a child. Little did we care about his finesse, former accomplishments and pattern of family movies and subjects before we embarked into live criticisms, be it from the honourable speaker or ministers. Anyhow, giving an apt reply with his most potent armour in his disposal, that is cinema, is Blessy, whose latest 'Kalimannu' is nothing but a lovely tribute about parenting and mother hood.
Shwetha Menon dons the role of Meera,  a club dancer turned item dancer in films  who dreams about becoming a lead lady in films at some point of her career. From her unexciting, derelict life where she was ditched and used by many , it was a taxi driver named Shyam (Biju Menon)who changed her life and gave it a new dimension with his loving interventions. But on the  very same day when Meera's first film as a heroine was having  it's premiere, Shyam who was retuning with Meera's newly knit celebrity gowns for the event meets with a fatal accident. Though he survives any big external injuries, the cardiac arrest which happened while on collision leaves him in a vegetable state , brain dead and  with little option for a return. Meera who is left all alone now hears about tesa technique, a testicular sperm aspiration procedure which can present her with a baby of dying shyam. The first of it kind of happening in India, the news about it creates a lot of uproar. How Meera stands her decision for the right to parenting forms the rest of the movie.
Another rare script from Blessy dealing with an unusual theme in Mollywood , the movie offers a delightful and engaging watch with everything in place. The director is able to answer every queries that propped up when he was trying to shoot the real child delivery of actress Shwetha. The shots are indeed very effectively used and talks much, supporting the cause of the narrative. Though 'kalimannu' is not in the league of other great flicks from the director and it turns propagandistic in the latter reels. The much spoken about theme, about the relation between the protagonist and her child in womb, just ends up in few scenes. There are also a few sequences that appear to have been made in a haste. But    the director's skillful touches help the movie to rise above the mundane and the mature climax is another highlight of the movie which is timed at 120 minutes and 6 seconds. The BG and musical scores from M Jayachandran, whose 8 songs are skillfully laid out in the narrative plan without affecting the story progression is another highlight of the movie.
Coming from a director like Blessy, Kalimmanu's performances and technical sides are all awesome, as usual. Satheesh Kurups' visual of the ever busy Mumbai and Raja Muhammed's editing suit the narrative pacing of the movie. The performances are all even with Shwetha Menon coming up with the boldest acts and taking away much of the laurels associated with the acting side of the movie. She was exceptional in many a scenes, tough appear a little bulky in the initial reels. Her perfect pitching of a performance is ably matched by Biju Menon, who simply makes us vouch for his character with least dialogues for a lead man. Suhasini also invites applauds for her character while all others in the frames play to their roles.
With almost all the factors for a watchable entertainer at place, this 'Kalimannu' may not spoil Blessy 's repute as a film maker with conviction and quality. Watch it for the performances and message that it propagates, so strongly.

MEMORIES REVIEW

Cast- Prithviraj, Miya, Vanitha, Suresh Krishna, Vijayaraghavan, Sreejith Ravi, Meghna Raj, Nedumudi Venu etc.

Music- Sejo John

Producer- P K Muralidharan, Shanta Murali

Director- Jeethu Joseph

Jeethu Joseph, who last delivered the typical Dileep comedy ‘My Boss’ and before that another humour-oriented film, ‘Mummy & Me’, had begun his directorial career with ‘Detective’, a rather well-made investigative thriller starring Suresh Gopi in the lead. Now, when Jeethu comes up with his new film, his fourth one, he goes back to doing a thriller, a real good suspense thriller. The film, ‘Memories’, is a slick thriller, well-written, well directed and with a clean performance by the lead actor Prithviraj,
‘Memories’ is an almost taut thriller; yes, an ‘almost taut’ thriller. There are a few hiccups, some minor, pardonable flaws, which however don’t stand in the way of your enjoying the movie. I did enjoy watching it. Good work Jeethu Joseph; you’ve proved that you can handle different genres quite effectively.
Sam Alex (Prithviraj) had been a dynamic, daring cop. But after a criminal targeted and shot down his wife and daughter before his eyes, he just lost all control of himself, his life and his career. He spends his days and nights boozing and doing almost nothing. His mother Marykutty (Vanitha Krishnachandran) is concerned about her son while his younger brother Sanju (Rahul Madhav) has begun to hate him and is disrespectful and indifferent towards Sam. He doesn’t even want Sam to attend his marriage, which he himself has decided, even without his mother’s involvement.
In the meantime, a couple of young officers working with the Customs department get abducted and murdered in a gruesome manner. Leading the investigating team is Vinod Krishna (Suresh Krishna), who’s the Superintendent of Police. As the case gets more complicated, with another murder happening and the cops remaining almost clueless, IG of Police Aravindaksha Menon (Vijayaraghavan), who is also a mentor and godfather to Sam, comes to meet him. He asks Sam to take up the investigation. Sam refuses, but finally takes it up, yielding to his mother’s earnest requests. Sam begins the investigation very callously, most of the time arriving drunk. But as things catch fire, we see the same old dynamic, daring cop back in action. The plot thus builds up, moving towards a very interesting climax…
‘Memories’ moves at a steady pace, it’s all controlled and well-knit. The plot is developed in the most convincing of manners and the suspense is well maintained. It’s almost a perfect edge-of-the-seat feel that you get while seeing the film. Of course the tempo is broken a bit when some flashback sequences come in, especially when it sort of meanders into a light romantic track, with a song, which however is well rendered and is pleasing too. In fact the director could have done away with the song and the romance bit too could have been cut short. That wouldn’t have affected the film; in fact that would have made it more effective and taut.
The fact that it’s all well-presented, well acted out and coherent to a great extent makes ‘Memories’ a film worth watching. Yes, go watch it if you like watching thrillers. ‘Memories’ is a good one, definitely worth a watch or two…

Performance
The film, on the performance side, belongs to Prithviraj. He has done a real commendable job, as Sam Alex. The drunken, irresponsible cop appears so natural and the gradual transformation that he undergoes too is portrayed very naturally. Real good work indeed! Suresh Krishna, Vanitha, Rahul, Sreejith Ravi, Nedumudi Venu etc have done justice to their parts. Miya’s character, that of a journalist, is typical of such thrillers and she does her part convincingly. Of course, for Miya, there is not much scope for performance with the character in hand. Meghna as Sam’s wife doesn’t have much to do.
Technical aspects
Sujith Vassudev deserves special appreciation for the splendid cinematography work that enhances the tempo in all respects. The others on the technical side, editor Johnkutty and art-director Saburam too have done good work.
Music
Background score, by Anil Johnson, is good. The songs (one is the title song and the other the romantic number) are good, but the romantic song, which is real good, could have been avoided. As for me, I won’t mind the song being there; but it does affect the flow a bit…
Script
Good work Jeethu Joseph. The script, by the director himself, is good and forms real good base for the film. He could of course have toned down the romance and family parts a bit; that would have made the film a perfect thriller. At the same time, Jeethu takes perfect care to show the transformation that Sam undergoes- from a drunken, irresponsible cop to a sober investigator- in the most natural and gradual of manners. That’s one of the highlights of the film. The investigation part and the suspense part are all handled brilliantly. Of course, ‘Memories’ is good work, from the writer’s side…
Direction
Jeethu Joseph had proved his grip over the thriller genre with his very first film. But now, with ‘Memories’ he proves that he could handle thrillers brilliantly and that he is real versatile, as a director of commercial films of all genres. Good work, Jeethu!!

Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi Review

Producer- Sameer Thahir
Director- Sameer Thahir
Cast- Dulquer Salman, Sunny Wayne, Surja Bala, Dhrithiman Chatterjee, Joy Mathew, Vanitha Krishnachandran etc.
Music- Rex Vijayan

Sameer Thahir takes us on an enchanting trip this time, with his ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’. The cinematographer-turned-director, who had earlier given us ‘Chaapa Kurish’ and ‘Esha’ (‘Esha’ is one of the five films in ‘5 Sundarikal’), this time explores a totally new terrain in Malayalam Cinema; and I should say that despite the slight lag that has come in, especially in the latter half of the film, it’s simply marvellous. Kudos, Sameer and team!!
‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’ traces the journey undertaken by Kasi (Dulquer Salman) and his close pal Suni (Sunny Wayne) on their motor-cycles, starting from Kerala and moving northwards. At the start it’s said that they are out without a destination in mind and that Suni is accompanying Kasi out of his own choice. Kasi’s decision was to go alone and he had told Suni that he’s just going away, maybe to the Himalayas. When Kasi finally kick starts his journey, he finds Suni waiting on the road for him, with a bike that he has taken from his uncle. Together they begin the trip. Though Kasi doesn’t say it, both he and Suni know very well where they are going. They pass through Andhra and arrive at Puri, from where they pass through Konark, places in rural West Bengal, Kolkata etc and move on, towards Nagaland. En-route they do meet people, all of whom have their own stories to tell and with whom Kasi and Suni relate in some way or the other. Their final destination however is Nagaland, where lives Assi (Surja Bala), Kasi’s sweet-heart.
The highlight of the film is that every single frame in it is beautiful. The locations are all well-chosen, the journey is well-narrated and it just flows on, like a slow river. You get the feel that you are sailing through a river, taking in the diverse sights at different spots on its banks and at the same time moving on to a final destination…Well, for those fed on formula films and for fans of Dulquer Salman and Sunny Wayne, the film may seem lagging in the second half. But lag or no lag, ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’ is a film that stands out as exquisitely beautiful and which is definitely not your usual road movie.

Performance

Dulquer Salman does a commendable job as Kasi and deserves real appreciation. Sunny Wayne lends able support while Surja Bala is also good. Dhrithiman Chatterjee and all others do their parts quite convincingly.

Technical aspects

Excellent cinematography, by Gireesh Gangadharan, is of course the highlight of ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’. You just can’t take your eyes off the beautiful frames; yes, it’s beauty and nothing but spell-binding beauty, from start to end. Sreekar Prasad has also done a wonderful job as the editor.

Music

Rex Vijayan lends able support on the music side; the songs are all good.

Script

Script by Hashir Mohamed is excellent. The way the story is blended with characters and their lives that we meet in the course of the journey and the way events from Kerala’s recent past are interwoven with the narrative makes it all interesting. Good job! It’s the splendour, the diversity of life that the film unravels and we travel, along with the protagonists, from one point to the other…

Direction

Sameer Thahir proves it once again. He’s indeed a director worth reckoning. As for ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’, it’s a film in which Sameer puts in his heart and soul, directing it with élan and also imparting to it a beauty which only a cinematographer-turned-director can…

5 SUNDARIKAL REVIEW & RATTING

Announced  as 'an anthology of love', and  coming from a camaraderie of directors whose bonding enters almost two decades, '5 Sundarikal' packed with five interesting stories of about 30 minutes each is an engaging hodgepodge of thought-provoking  emotions, for the viewers. Though all in the pack are not of equal excellence , 'the anthology stands out for its overall finesse in story telling and technical standards.
The movie starts of with 'Sethulakshmi', directed by debutante director Shyju Khalid  based on a short story by M Mukundan and the screen writing by Muneer Ali and Shyam Pushkaran. The movie is indeed a shocking take about two innocent school kids, whose life changes following their interest in taking a photograph of theirs. Shyju handles the theme with amazing maturity and his kids  Anikha and Chethan perfectly grabs your attention  with their spotless faces and smiles. With all respect to the master writer, it needs to be noted that Shyju has been able to skillfully translate the pain induced on the reader by the original transcript many fold, while  he attempted it for the big screen.
Even while we sit shaken by  "Sethulekshmy,' arrives 'ISha' a much clever and lighter   short by Sameer  Thahir  scripted by Sidharth Bharathan . With plenty of twists, this film talks about two strangers (Nivin Pauly and Isha Sharvani) who falls for each other all of a sudden, amidst their unexpected encounter on a New year eve. Isha is excellent in her Mollywood debut with her dancing and acrobatic skills, though the final twists may not be the very bests you have seen.
The first half ends with Aashiq Abu's  Gouri. Scripted by Abhilash Kumar, the movie is indeed a downer with middling sequences. Gowry tells about the surging love of a  married couple (Kavya Madhavan and Biju Menon), who plans to surprise each other  on their wedding anniversary.  The finale of the plot seems pretty similar to some Bollywood RGV films.
The second half of '5 Sundarikal' is a treat for connoisseurs of good cinema. Amal Neerad comes out of his traditional mould and style with a 'kullante Bharya' featuring Dulqar Salman  as the narrator, about the hypocritical men around him in the apartment complex. The movie scripted by  Unni R  based on a Chinese fable works on many levels and easily connects with every kind of audience with its hilarity of observations. The movie ends up as an extraordinary one with its emotional finale.
Following it with a decent tale is Anwar Rasheed with his Aami, based on Hashir Muhammed's script. It talks about a real estate broker (Fahad Faasil) who travels all the way from Kozhikod to Kochy to settle his deals and about  his wife who calls him on phone all through the night with tricky puzzles to keep him awake. Apart from the finesse of the production what really impress you is Fahad fazzil, who once again showcase what a fine actor he is .This is the character (together with Baby Anikaha of the first tale) who walks back home with you when you are out of the theaters.
The movie vitrines the finesse of women in different situations and how she makes a unfathomable impressions on the lives of men with whom she is . The only problem with the movie is that there are no real lead lines to hold the movie together as they are set in different backdrops.  Apart from that in 'Isha', every other movie has the lead women as a subdued and homely face , whose caring face and love is brought to fore than anything else. And quite interestingly, most of these movies  are neither heroine centric and tell a tale  from the angle of men.
The movie is indeed a rollar coaster ride with the best happenings in the first and last hours . The other highlights of the  movie seems to be top notch technical sides with impressive camera works and fine music in almost all the short films.
One the whole, this 5 sundharikal is a remarkable motion picture which  talks of love beyond cosmetic barriers attempting to recapture the lost romance in relationships.  A really  amusing collection from Mollywood's  younger breed of directors.....,quite  emotional, heartrending and also insightful at times.

Rating -7/10
