PATTAM POLE REVIEW

When a regular cinematographer turns to direction, we usually expect certain lapses which were made good only by quite a few among them. Almost all of the expected problems are explicit in the debut directorial venture of Azhagappan in 'Pattom Pole'. A sort of love story that we usually witness in Tamil and Hindi, the movie grabs interest only with its different start, lead pair  and technical sides.

The movie opens with the shots of Karthik (Dulquer Salman) and Riya (Malavika Mohan) eloping one fine morning to Ooty in the expectations that the society and their family around will be opposing the Brahmin boy tying the knot with the Christian girl. But within days they find their purse devoid of money and start fighting for silly issues which ultimately lead them back to their safe haven of family and home, separated.  Their families have a sign of relief, but as they are from the same area in Alappuzha, they are poised to see more in the given situations which once again may change their life forever.
The highlight of the movie is the first fifteen minutes, which starts off in a very diverse style and gives us chances for a very different movie like a 'Vainnaithandi Varuvaaya'. But this enthusiasm soon turns into predictability where the climax can be spotted miles away. In the efforts to make the lead pair loves again, the story moves through the common paths that we had been with many times earlier in many films. Sherin (Archana Kavi) and Mike (Anoop Menon), the leading pair's colleague and boss at work at Rossario event management company, do the supporting act that we really expects of their characters. The scripts by K Gireehkumar demanded a varied thinking, as he seems to have forgetten that the Mollywood youth here has the habit of watching every other worthy movies of Tollywood and Bollywood, where they are more than familiar with each of the sequences portrayed in the later half.
The highlight of the movie is once again  Dulquer, who appears very much as the confused Brahmin guy who finds his best friend in his father. Malavika Mohan has the looks of a model and plays her part with energy and confidence but doesn't have the capability to give the needed intensity of emotions through her face.  Anoop Menon has the best of the lines in the movie while Archana kavi also plays her part well. Jayaprakash and  Lalu Alex are left with  their age old mannerisms and characters which offer little challenges to them.
Though the emotional quotient is less, Azhaggappan excels in making the movie a visual splendour .His cameraman Selvakumar has captured some brilliantly crafted shots of the backwaters of Kuttanadu, which is optimally toned as in ads. The songs composed by M Jayachandran are also likable.
In Pattom Pole', Azhagappan suffers from a wafer thin plot and predictability. Had he approached the movie with a more compelling and unpredictable lanes, this love story could have been simply the best this year. Any way , better luck next time. If you don't have too much serious things to do, grab a popcorn, and think of a lighter watch of 'Pattom Pole'.

IDUKKI GOLD REVIEW

The director who kick started the trend of new generation movies , Aashiq Abu, is back with a movie that chronicles the fun and taste of a bygone generation who at fifties, is trying to catch the spirit of their thrilling adolescence. A novel attempt in any count for its actors, storyline and narrative structure, 'Idukki Gold' is a movie that can be prescribed for an onetime watch. Also another film that can be listed among the recent trend of 'stoner' movies (Kili Poyi, Honey Bee....to name a few), the movie has drugs as its backdrop, but limits any coarse language and unqualified attempts on wits.
Idukki Gold told as five different episodes, opens with Micheal (prathap Pothen) coming back from the former   Czehosolovakia to track his estranged old friends who were with him during his school days at the resident convent , St Aloysius at Idukki. He places an advertisement on a popular daily  and finds Madan(Manianpillai Raju) , a planter and K C Ravi (Raveendran) a photo studio owner, in a day. Together they set out in their old standard van to find the rest of the gang Antony (Babu Antony) and Raman (Vijayaragahavan). After some interesting episodes they find Antony, who is  running restaurant with his French wife at Kochy and  Raman, a government servant, now all set to start a new life with a new partner. After their initials celebrations they now decides to have a visit to their old school at Idukki, where they used to have the taste of the 'IdukkiGold', the special ganga plant reared near the dam premises. But little did they knew that there were some more who were patiently waiting for the gang to return even after 35 years.
The story by  Santhosh Echikkanam qualifies for a interesting film but the scripts by Shyam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair, especially at the climax loses the grip and tumbles down in minutes. The movie is packed with many nice moments and fine short dialogues are the highlights all through. A satirical look at the attempts to catch the air of nostalgia, the comedies that is centred on the eighties and the treatment that gives the feel of a rustic flick and the added effects definitely boast of the finesses of the director in Aashiq Abu. Much of the undetailed side stories of the lead men are presented just in a dialogue or so and this implicit and unforced nature of storytelling is the prevalent speciality of its presentations. But what that may not be acceptable for the general public will be the promotion of drugs in the name of entertainment. Even a song is visualised on the colourful effects (though a bit more than realistic) of the drug use, which in fact may induce and invite the ordinary youth to take a chance. But if you can ignore this morality speeches and policing, 'Idukky Gold' can be another worthy addition to Asshiq Abu's list of experiments with themes and actors.
The performance by the five seniors and the juniors are what that pushes the movie without much turbulence. Raveendran steals the show with his one-liners while the others are also effective. The ladies, Praseetha and Sajitha Madathil' doesn't have any big roles to cherish.  The songs and BG scores by Biji pal are effective and come up at the right moments. Shyju Khaalid as usual is exceptional with his camera, especially the shots that opens at the enormous grotto and the dam sides,  while V Saajan in editing was able to amplify the mood and retro feel of the flick.
Though this 'Idukki Gold' doesn't end up as a movie that is a definite prescription for all, the meticulousness with which it is made and the feel of real life makes it special for an one-time watch. Connoisseurs, don't go by the initial bad word of mouth, this is one that may satisfy you for being an Aashiq Abu fan.

Kollywood seems to be on a spree, releasing movies every other week non-stop. After Idharkuthane Aasapatai Balakumara on Oct2, Nayyandi will be hitting the theatres on Oct10 with winning a clean U in the censorship board.
The director and crew have largely credited Dhanush as the reason completing way ahead of time as the actor had pumped in quite a handsome dedication for this flick. The entire shoot was completed within 48 days and it's a remarkable achievement indeed. The pan Indian star Dhanush is essaying the role of a Kuthu Vilaku vendor and the ever bubbly actress Nazriya is Vana Roja, all quirky and localized names to go well with the fans.
So mark your calendars folks, Oct 10 is the date!
