DAIVATHINTE SWANTHAM CLEETUS REVIEW

DAIVATHINTE SWANTHAM CLEETUS REVIEW

Mammootty has a very interesting year in 2013 with many films featuring him in good, humanitarian roles. But none of the them, except 'Immanuel' had been in that clear commercial grammar, which also affected their Box Office run. The latest from the Mammootty camp for Onam 'Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus' is one film that can help the senior star to find another safe hit. Opening in a light note with plenty of comedies, and progressing through small heroics and culminating in those emotional sequences, the movie will definitely satisfy the fans of the star.
Directed by newcomer G Marthandan and scripted by Benny P Nayarambalam, the movie have Mammootty as a small-time goon, who is selected by a priest to play Jesus Christ in a drama meant for fund-raising for the church. His uncanny resemblance to Jesus Christ in looks and mannerisms -the composure, stillness and glow on the face all forces the Priest (siddhique) to have him in the lead role. Though Cleetus controls himself much, his actual self comes to the fore during rehearsals. And even when the actualities behind the new actor is revealed, the priest persists in his decision of continuing the drama with the goonda guy, in the hope that the character in which he is in the dram has the power to lead his transformation.
The movie has an ensemble cast of Aju Varghese, Thesni Khan, Abu Salim, Rajath menon Suraj Venjaramoodu and P Balachandran who makes merry with their witty one-liners all through the first half. Benny P Nayarabalam succeeds in giving them all fine dialogues to time well and uses many satirical gags on the existing film industry as well, to push the narratives. Mammootty in a very different getup appear energetic than many of his recent films, but has little to do in the acting side expect in the final sequences and make a easy cakewalk through the movie. The lead ladies, including Honey rose were average. But the later half gains a pinch of melodrama, moves around usual Benny P Nayarambalam sequences before concluding into an optimum finale.
The technical sides of the movie are fine with good visuals from Pradeep Nair. G marthandan also will benefit with this film as a 'debut-hit' maker, but needs to fine tune his sequence building abilities. The BG scores are average with no catchy songs in the narrative..
All in all, this 'Cletus, may succeed as a festival escapade and is sure to make the producers merry.

NORTH 24 KAATHAM REVIEW

Coming from debutant director Anil Radhakrishnan Menon, the latest Fahadh Faasil film- North, 24 kaatham is an endearing film, taking a close look at the plight of a few men who is destined to take different roads on a ' harthal' day to reach their destinations.  And on the way some goals are changed while some in the journey finds it the most transitioning experience in their life.
The movie has Fahadh Faasil as a genius worker in his IT company, who is revered for his brilliant outputs, but  a grave OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) for which he is undergoing treatment forces him to look at every simple events in his life with undue seriousness.  And he is hated by his colleagues who are ready to throw a party if he leaves the job.  Even in his home, he cannot adjust with his younger brother and his parents who take life as it comes.  Hari is naturally fearful of long travels and anything that disrupts his carefully laid down schedules.  But on a faithful 'harthal' day, Hari is forced to take a ride to the capital city to attend a conference where a software that he has developed is the point of discussion.  On the train, he meets Gopalan master, who is mentally down hearing the news about his wife who is critically ill.  A social work graduate Narayani (Swathi), who is travelling in the same train decides to change her travel plans and to take the octogenarian back to his home at Kozhikode.  Hari  who doesn't have a feel to support this oldman is drawn into the scheme of things due to his subdued nature of handling emotional things.  How this journey which takes multitude of options from ambulances to row boats changes his life forever forms the rest of the movie.
Also scripted by the director, the movie stands out for its interesting and relatable plotlines and for the liberal dose of satirical observation.  Though the logic of taking difficult routes and depending on compose directions to reach Kozhikode, that too, on a harthal day appear illogical the life that is sprinkled in between engage the viewers all through its screen length of 126 minutes.  The technical sides are top notch with Jayesh Nair recording some finest of the images.  The debutant music director, Govind P. Menon excels with his BG scores helping the movie to tide over the little lags in between.
But the movie one again belongs to Fahad Faazil, the most surprising talent to hit mollywood in recent times.  His believable to the core and even with very few dialogues, he is able to bring out the turbulence storms within and towards the climax when we his first smile for the movie, North, 24 kaatham has landed in the perfect of the cinematic portrayals in the recent times equally supporting him in the natural act is Swathy Reddy.  Nedumudi Venu also brings out his experience in balancing heavily melodramatic scenes especially in the final scenes.
With almost all finer aspects of film making in place this simple movie with lighter story is thoroughly digestible and makes for one of the fine watch in recent times.

KUNJANANTHANTE KADA REVIEW

KUNJANANTHANTE KADA REVIEW

Coming for the National Award winning director Salim Ahamed, 'Kunjananthante Kada' is a  movie in the same league  of his debut film but narrated with lesser pace and  finesse. A movie which talks about contemporary issues , but in a more personal level, the movie also points about the level of egos that makes it difficult to appreciate relationships, love and even development.
The movie has none other Mammootty as a egoistic man Kunjananthan. He, though entered into a love life with Chithira(Nyla Usha)  after a period of romance, is currently in a tumultuous married life with no understanding or adjustments between each others. Kunjananthan has spend much of his life in the grocery shop, with proud memories of his father who was appreciated by everyone in the village of Vattipuram. His shop and its groceries mean much to him who cares for them just or more than his family and often engage in soliloquies with it. He doesn't even pay heed to the owner Nambiar's  offer for a big money to shift to another place and start something new. But as the Road Development Society  of the state plans to widen the roads and serves a notice to evacuate the place in 15 days, Kunjanthanan is left with attempts to somehow avoid leaving his priced possessions.
The writer in Salim Ahamed has successfully balanced the personal ethos of a egoist and the social realities around in a skilful manner, just like in his award winning debut film. His dialogues planted in the Kannur Slang were so real that the arguments between the wife and husband seemed so real .  He also takes time to wisely criticise the mindset of people to use  religion, emotion and even the suicide of a mentally challenged for their own causes. Each of his characters in the frame appeal very realistic and matched the situations and stances in which they are.But the lethargic pace in the latter half may not interest lovers of popualr films.
Salim Ahamed is sure to earn accolades for the direction of this film as well, which is top notch as per festival standards. And in the technical side he has got the support from the likes of senior cameraman Madhu Ambat and Rasool Pookkuty, whose frame and sound designs seems the best contributory for the movie. The synchronized  sound recording has not been such perfect in Mollywood in recent times. The music by M Jayachandran was also impressive though the BG Scores by Issac Thomas Kottukappally appeared jarring at times. A good applause must also go to the art department which was finer than ever, recreating a realistic village junction and the associated structures..
The performance side is really impressive with Mammootty getting the best of the roles in his last dozen films. He does justice to the role with awesome support from debutante 'Nyla Usha. Her role with a definite stances is aptly balanced and supported by the writing, though she has nothing to do in the final scenes of transformation. The kannur dialect used, add to the realism of the movie.
Kunjananthante Kada is a movie that needs to be appreciated for sure, but the slow pacing especially in the later half and the lack of commercially viable factors may mar it's theatre run. But in the festival circuits and among serious viewers, this movie will get awesome applauds for its meticulous making and content .
