3 DOTS MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

Coming after the movie 'Ordinary', director Sugeeth is once gain trying to repeat the charms that he has paced before the viewers through his first film. But the effect is no just the same , as a  wandering story line and not that fine execution in the later half takes the intended charm out of '3 Dots'. But this does not make the movie a tedious affair and may help it to carry on with the needed collections at the Box Office window, if marketed well.

The movie has Prathap Pothen, Kunchakko Boban and Biju Menon as Pappn, Vishu and Louie who landed up in the same cell in the  jail  for different reasons. While Vishnu is a pickpocket, Louie was an Quotation gang leader and Pappan , a bank employee who met with a financial scandal following his illegal  relationship with a lady. As the three some is having a dejected life inside the jail, arrives Dr Issac Samuel,(Narein) a criminal psychologist who is in a mission to correct the mindsets of jail inmates with his inspirational speeches. Following his prescriptions, the threesome decides to start a fresh life away from their criminal aspirations. And once they are out of the jail sentence, they meet the doctor who helps them to start a playschool. Vishnu also starts running an ambulance, while Louie takes the job of a tutor in a driving school, run by Grace(Anjana Menon), who is also their neighbour. Vishnu instantly develops a liking for Lekshmy(Janani Aiyer)who comes up as a teacher in their playschool while Louie is all after Grace who is a widow with a child.

As they are passing through some of their best days in their life, Dr Issac Samuel is found in a desolated mental state as his divorce proposal is pending before the courts. He is not even allowed to visit his only son who is studying in a posh school of the locality. The threesome, who wants to give something back to their  mentor , now decides to kidnap the child from the school, as they are convinced that this act will somehow help the doctor to delay his divorce and get hold of the child. The kid, Mathaichan is a gem of a child who instantly develops friendship with the three, now enjoying underground at a beautiful locale at krishnagiri, Munnar. What happens next follows the plot of the movie.

The highlight of the movie is a relatively fresh storyline, which has got its share of astute surprises and twists waiting for you. Maybe, you have spotted something like this in some hit Tamil movies, but there are no forced attempts of any big melodrama. The feel good movie is carved out with fine technical standards, carried over from their last big hit "ordinary'. The threesome in the lead , Kunchakko Boban, Biju Menon and Prataap Pothen definitely have a cakewalk through their roles which doesn't but demand heavy acting from them. But the lion's share of applauds are taken by Biju Menon who comes up with something interesting to make you laugh  in every scenes. Of the ladies, Anjana is fine while Janani just manages to be a beautiful face.
But the real pitfalls are that after much wastage of time in the former half, expecting something big to popup later, the movie hardly thrills when the thriller elements are on place. Some of the portions in the climax appear to have been done half heartedly. Moreover, attempts to make an action hero out of Kunchakko Boban also fails in the climax fight. '3 Dots' is also a bit overlong at 2 hours and 40 minutes.

But the cinematography by Faisal Ali, songs by Vidya sagar and their bright picturisations, and interesting BG scores helps the movie to manage itself as a colorful entertainer. Though not anywhere in the league of their last hit, this '3 Dots' can be advised for an onetime watch for families , for its clean gags and one-liners.

AMEN MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

AMEN MALAYALAM MOVIE REVIEW

Lijo Jose Pellissery is a director with true conviction. We had seen him sticking to his ideas of ingenious cinema in his first two films, indifferent about the front benchers and their expectations. But here in his third 'Amen', he has paid heed to the popular tastes ably integrating them with the best of the imaginative thinking for a film, truly based on local culture. And what you see on screen is a real 'new age' masterpiece. Though with its share of some 'toilet humour 'and fart wits', which surprisingly gel well and add to the originality of the narratives, 'Amen' is a must watch for all lovers of Mollywood cinema. If you dare to miss it, you are going to miss the best of the creative heights and thoughtful fantasies, Mollywood have ever attempted.
In 'Amen'  Lijo endeavours  a contrast from his earlier thrillers and   takes you to the backwaters of Kumarangari - a land where Church  rules supreme with the divine powers of Saint Geevarghese.
The senior priest Abraham Ottaplakkan (Joy Thomas) and his  sexton Ousepp(Sunil Sugatha) meets none in the village who dare to challenge the age-old customs. The Geervargheese band troupe, which the church rears was once the prestige of the locales, but now with its players like Estappan (Rajesh Hebbar) having met with untimely death, Louie Pappan (kalabhavan mani) who leads the troupe now is dejected with the regular failures in competitions. Solomon,(Fahd fazil) the son of late Esthappan, who loves to play clarinet is but forced to take up the job of assistant to the sexton. He is never allowed to play in the band by the priest, as he always falters while performing before  the crowd. Solomon is but in deep love with Sosanna,(Swathy) the sister of  Peelippose contractor and Mathayichan (Nandhu and Sudheer karamana)  of the most  affluent family led of the village.
As the church is planning to call it a day for its band troupe which had been big winners a decade ago, here arrives the young father Vincent Vattoly(Indrajith) who by his different looks, attires, interests and verbal skills starts creating an aura among the villagers as never before. This special man is on a mission, to re induce life to the band on ruins and in fact to the church itself.
In 'Amen', which is basically a love story and fable on how God actively take part in each other's lives, what you carry home besides this lovable pair, are some incredible moments that arouse myriad emotions. A story of universal appeal, scripted to perfection by P S Rafeeque, the movie set in  the small town milieu lends the plot a kind of passion missing in metro life.  Handled most efficiently by Lijo Jose Pellissery, with several authoritative moments, 'Amen', without doubt, is a best fantasy tale  that triumphs. The drama, the tension, the passion... it's all there in 'Amen'. The solitary inadequacy is that the movie is a bit too prolonged in the middle of the second half which also has some euphoric moments. In fact, a few sequences, although vital to the plot, could've been shortened for an enhanced impact. The heated conversation involving Father Vattoly and Father Abraham  is brilliantly penned and executed. Ditto for the emotional sequences featuring Fahad, Rachana and Swathy  in this hour. The culmination to the film is a highpoint and mirrors a big surprising reality as well.

'Amen' also  appeals for the characters that Lijo  has created, as well as the resilience and optimism with which the principal actors bring alive the characters on screen. The The admiration for Fahad fazil  has scaled altitudes to  affirm that  the supremely talented actor delivers another performance here that's at par with his previous accomplishments. He, very casually, re-evaluates screen acting in 'Amen' with a body language, and vulnerability, that has his grief and inaction, all falling upon place, perfectly. Indrajith is lovely in a special role, getting maximum claps. Swathy in her first Malayalam outing does justice to the role of Sosananna, while Rachana excels with his realistic portrayal of Clara, Solmon's sister.A word of praise must also go to Joy Thomas, Sunil Sugatha, Vinod Chempan, and a host of other lesser known artists who has made this a picture perfect movie.

Apart from the  right blend of sparkle and spice , the other big highlight is the cinematography by Abinandam Ramanujam. Never before would have you watched in films, the backwaters with that kind of life and beauty which usually was displayed only in shorter tourism advertisements. His high angle shots and twisted angles give that very vibrant and rustic looks to the village and its folks. And no two opinions about his night shots which remind you of some brightly painted portraits. Add to that the addictive music by Prasanth Pillai - the most original and gifted talent that we had in recent years. The harmonious and pleasant-sounding album with such tracks like 'Aatmavin, Sosanna and Shap song. each of those tracks are getting popular already. The best part is, the songs have not been filmed on romantic landscapes, but at everyday locations, which makes it so real and very much in sync with the mood of the film. Enviably one song is canned in a single shot, too. The BG music design also adds a lot of pep. Also applause are due to its excellent production design, editing by Manoj and the hard work of its art director.

'Amen' is definitely several notches above the stuff we've been subjected to in the past. A wonderful movie-going experience, you come out feeling a sense of pride, pleasure and fulfillment after having watched 'Amen'. Just do not miss it. Hugely recommended.

DAVID & GOLIATH REVIEW & RATTING

DAVID & GOLIATH REVIEW & RATTING

Beautiful' and 'Trivandrum Lodge' has made Jayasuriya and Anoop Menon as the most demanded pair on the Mollywood circuit.  And whenever they join together expectations are naturally quite high. But their latest in 'David and Goliath' fails to keep the quality of their earlier flicks in terms of scripts and pacing, and maintains a lower scale to tell a tale that needed a much bigger canvas.
The movie has Jayasuriya as David, an orphan brought up by a priest named father Jerald,(P Balachandran) in his little church at the interiors of Wagamon. A simpleton who is very good at heart, David is a fast learner who fears to express himself in public. This timid youngster who also have a bleeding nose when yielding to fear, but displays an unparallelled finesse in creating machines. His many big inventions started with a heater for father Jerald and a self running generator.  When Fr.Jerald dies following a snake bite and a Bengali millionaire comes up to buy the tea estate and the land surrounding the church, David and the sexton Outha(Indrans) is ousted of the church. But a planter Sunny Ulahannan, who lost much of the money in business, accidentally  takes note of David's inventions and bring him home to reap a big fortune from his ideas. Sunny's wife Deepa and only daughter Twinkle but couldn't agree with Sunny's greedy intentions which forms the rest of the movie.
This time Anoop has settled for a story line that hardly talks about infidelity issues and dialogues here are quite decent and with dignity. But this movie somehow losses the charm with a seemingly half baked script lines that is unwarrantably stretched. The movie has story that could have been told in just 45 minutes and when it is stretched without any notable number of characters, each of the halves appear hollow. Moreover, the characterization of David is little perplexing, even giving a feel of mentally retarded at times, though it is stated in the opening reels that he is an intelligent boy capable of scoring a cent percent marks in exams. Anoop's Sunny is no big Goliath here who always shows an humanness at heart and get reformed in the earliest demanded moment, avoiding any proverbial fight at any point. The later half and the climax could have been a more   impressive one, has the scribe added a few more characters in the frames and made it in a bigger canvas..
As of now, 'David and Goliath' is not a bad film but one with impressive production values. The major highlight being  Jithu Damodhar's camera which captures the greener pastures of Wagamon as never before. In fact the editor Xian seems to be in great strain  to accommodate more of the best made shots which indeed has resulted in a slower pacing of the movie. Jayasuriya is  first rate as David, and the role  feels like an extension of his Abdhu of Trivandrum lodge'. Anoop Menon,BalaChandran , Indrans, Anumol and Soumya are fine in their roles. The two songs by Ratheesh Vega are also good. The opening titles and the total production design also desire accolades. Altogether this Rajeev Nath film is much better than his previous endeavours in production values. Had it been with a more convincing plot, the movie could have made big money and applauds at the Box Office.

RED WINE REVIEW & RATTING

RED WINE REVIEW & RATTING

With Superstar Mohanlal, Fahd Fazil, Asif Ali and a host of young artists at his disposal, debutante director Salam Bapu's 'Red wine' was expected to hatch up a surprise. But with a very predictable story, average dialogues and execution, 'Red Wine' just manages to end up another regular film that tries for something different in presentations.

The movie is set in a pattern which moves back and forth across time. From the very first shot we are introduced to Fahad's  A C Anoop, the local secretary of the communist part of Ambalavayal in Wayanad, who occasionally comes up as an actor for a local drama troupe headed by Unni(Priyanandhanan).  An engineering graduate, he is quite adamant on his stands for values and social commitments, and spearheads the movements against land mafia and encroachment issues. And naturally he is quite popular even with the opposition leaders, local people and adivaasis.

But one that very day, we find him dead in a hotel room at Calicut where he was taking rest after the drama.

Mohanlal as  Ratheesh Vasudevan, another upright officer, makes an uneventful entry and finds ways to crack the crime and to locate the murderer using his intuitions and traditional but brainy methods.
Asif Ali comes up as Ramesh, the third big name in the plot, working for an automobile company to support his doting wife Deepthy(Mia) who has eloped with him from an affluent family.

The highlight of the movie is the narratives that are quite non linear, build with bits and parts from different lives. As the ACP is quietly cracking the case, we are left open to various events in the lives of Anoop, his love with Jasmine (Maria John), and his initiatives to line up the oppressed for more privileges. But at no point the character of Anoop appear lethal enough to get eliminated.

The movie is sprinkled with lot of  cultural tastes of the gone  generations of Calicut like 'Communist party, 'Basheer' to P M Taj' and 'Kakkothikavile Appoppanthadikal' which also give a sudden attachment to the theme on hand.  Wonderful performances from Asif Ali and Fahad are also the highlights of the movie which has Mohanlal doing a restrained cake walk through his role of an investigator, who hit a sudden realization of emotions with the men whom he is after. But sadly, nothing much is offered for the legend here. T G Ravi, Saiju Kurup, Mia and newcomer Maria john gives   some inspired performances.
But the scripts by Maman  K Rajan doesn't have the meat to qualify as an emotional thriller. Expecting to create one in the styles of Padmarajan and MT of early eighties, the characters except that of Asif Ali demands much more clarity and finesse in writing. More over the lines that they lip synk needed to be more powerful than what we have now. The loss of any sort of suspense and twists, together with its predictable nature harms its narratives very much. Adding to that is the traditional shot making by Manoj Pillai and an over the top BG Scores by Biji pal which all affects the effectiveness of the aspiring thriller. The pace of the movie is also pretty slow and it appears stretched even in its 140 minutes length. Any how, Salam Bapu needs to fine tune his directorial skills before attempting  another film.  Directorial flourishes are surely visible, but he may need   more time to emerge as a filmmaker of real punch.

'Red Wine' is but a clean bit of film which can definitely be prescribed for families. An one time watch for others though its is quite predictable to the core.

KILI POYI REVIEW

MOVIE NAME ; KILI POYI

YEAR ; 2013

LANGUAGE ; MALAYALAM

CAST ; ASIF ALI , AJU , SAMPATH , SAMATA AGARWAL etc.....

MUSIC ; RAHUL RAJ

PRODUCER ; Siby Thottupuram & Joby Mundamattom

DIRECTOR ; VINAY GOVIND

REVIEW

Bred by the likes of  successful directors like V K Prakash, debutante Vinay Govind safely follows his mentor's style in the new movie 'Kili Poyi'. With a fine production design, and values, this movie may not be savored by any who looks for quality story content or inspiring messages. With such a funny title, none would have expected it to deliver such things, though....

Yet another friendship and adventure tale, that was kick started by the likes of 'Dil Chahta Hai', the movie has Asif Ali and Aju Varghese playing Chacko and Hari , two buddies who are working in a firm at Bangalore. Their demanding and pressure filled life often take comfort in Ganja, drinking and smoking. Always irked, harassed and fed up by the tantrums of their lady boss  (Sandra Thomas) ,they decides to take a break and head to Manali. But as their naughty plays fail them to catch the flight, they head to Goa in a vintage car. Chacko establish friendship with a beautiful foreigner named Rachel(Sabreen Baker) , who but puts a bag full of cocaine into their car in a moment of haste. They return to Bangalore with a million dollar worth mysterious bag. But soon things get mixed up; they are on to embroil more trouble as giant gangs are on the streets to find clues about the bag.

Suitably forewarned for its 'A' certification, the movie, which gets over in less than hundred minutes, targets only the youth among the new generation audiences. And so 'Kili Poyi'  is replete with routine youth dialogues, adult double entres', plenty of smoke and  'F...' words. Very few sequences go without the mandatory warning stuff on drinking and smoking.  Apart from the drinking, this time the protagonists have stepped on to the use of 'Ganja' in a regular mode, making it look like an appreciable act for viewers who even hadn't thought of that.

Though the scripts are average, the hilarious, natural dialogues, bits and pieces of old  classic films finely integrated into the narratives and good performances are the aces of the movie .The director Vinay Govind shows immense promise as a name to stay afloat in commercial Mollywood. He has carefully avoided the clich, and has packaged a pacy thriller which doesn't bore you much.  The technical sides are top notch with excellent cinematography and  aptly toned visuals  from Pradheesh M Nair, while Mahesh Narayanan's sharp cuts has eliminated any fall in the  narrative pace. Also the music, title song and background score by Rahul Raj are excellent, remarkably elevating the quality of the narratives. One of the high points is the climax BG lines that is an absolute  winner.

In the acting side, Asif Ali dissuades to play the overpowering hero this time, which is a welcome get back to the safer zone. His aid Aju gets enough space to impress us with his smart, well timed reactions.  Sampath in his macho look shines as Rana, while  Raveendran as Disco Douglas is also convincing. Joju George and Sreejith Ravi  play to their role. But the female protagonists don't have much to do, as usual.

Overall,' Kili Poyi' is definitely not your cup of tea  if you have been chagrined by films like 'Delly Belly' and 'TrivandrumLodge'. For all those conventional viewers, please stay away as you may not be able to sustain a half an hour of the movie. For the rest, 'Kili Poyi' may be an above average experience. A smoke filled entertainer, without anything inspiring, though.

SHUTTER REVIEW

NAME ; SHUTTER

YEAR ; 2013

LANGUAGE ; MALAYALAM

CAST ; LAL , SREENIVASAN , PREMKUMAR etc,,,

PRODUCER ; SARITHA ANN THOMAS

DIRECTOR ; JOY MATHEW

REVIEW

Shutter’ is one film which proves that filmmaking is not at all about being prolific or being part of the mainstream. It took Joy Mathew over two and a half decades, after his notable performance in John Abraham’s ‘Amma Ariyaan’, to come out with his debut directorial film. Joy Mathew, who played a key role in the 1986 John Abraham movie and who has been active as a theatre person and activist, gives us a striking and wonderful movie in ‘Shutter’, a film that’s worth many rounds of discussions and critical analysis.
‘Shutter’ begins with Suran (Vinay Forrt) going about in his auto-rickshaw, in the city of Kozhikode and then the film moves on to other characters as well. Very soon we meet film-director Manoharan (Sreenivasan), who is gearing up to make his next film, his second one, which he is making after a long gap of time. Manoharan happens to travel in Suran’s auto-rickshaw and forgets his bag in the auto-rickshaw. We meet Rasheed (Lal), who has been in the Gulf and who now gets ready to get his daughter married off, especially since she has boys among her friends and interact with them over cell-phone. Suran is a close aide and friend of Rasheed and as they wander about at night on Suran’s auto-rickshaw, planning to get some booze, they come across a prostitute (Sajitha Madathil). Rasheed makes Suran talk to her and soon she is on Suran’s auto-rickshaw. They move about in search of a hotel room and finally, on finding no place for their nocturnal adventures, decide to settle down in an unused shop room, owned by Rasheed. Suran puts Rasheed and the lady inside the shop, downs the shutter, locks it and goes away, promising to return at midnight with food. The plot develops from here.
‘Shutter’ is not just a story; it’s much more than that. There of course is an element of suspense, handled in a neat way and there are glimpses from life in Kozhikode city, presented realistically and packaged attractively. But it’s something else that forms the crux of the movie’s plot. The film is basically about human relationships, perspectives and changing perspectives. How a few hours, spent behind closed shutters, can change life for you and bring about a drastic shift in one’s perspectives is shown very sensitively. The very complex of human relationships and the innate goodness of human nature is what the film stresses on. All this and much more makes the film stand out as one of the best Malayalam films in recent times.

Script

Joy Mathew has done a good and balanced work of the script. The characterization aspect and the way the story evolves has all been handled deftly.

Direction

Good work, Joy Mathew. He knows very well what to deliver and how to package and deliver it and does full justice to his job. Congrats!!

Verdict watch It,, lots of surprises in store for you…

ASIN MAINTAING A LOW PROFILE

One of the top actresses in Kollywood as well as in Bollywood is maintaining a relatively low profile of late. Asin has not been spotted on the big screen for a while now and that is enough to spur ample rumours. Fact remains that she has one of the best and enviable track records of heroines in Bollywood. Having taken the initiative to venture into Bollywood, Asin has acted in 6 Hindi flicks, out of which 4 belong to the Rs. 100 Crore club! After this tiring feat, the gorgeous and diligent actress is chilling out. "I feel that I have a lot of potential which is yet to be explored in Bollywood and I find it funny when they say that I am the lucky mascot and part of the 100-crore club, though that does not define me. I got the time to relax and think when recently I took a backpacking trip with my school friends to the US. Now that I have the numbers, I want to take up roles where I get to act" says the actress.
Buzz has it that she is seeing an American citizen, and this is the reason why she flew to the US off and on in the past few months. The grapevine is abuzz that the secretive actress has been there to spend time with her secret lover and that she hasn't signed any project in language, owing to her impending marriage.
Meanwhile, it is rumoured that a big-shot director from K-town has approached the beautiful actress. Sources say that she was impressed with the story and has shown interest in working on the project. So, possibly, we can expect a positive turn out, sometime later this year.
